Student Volunteering Week, 22nd -28th February 2016

It's student volunteer week! Hear what student Stephanie has to say about her volunteer experience with Good Move Glasgow. Student Volunteering Week 2016 will take place from 22-28 February and the GSVB team would like to recognise the contribution that students make to volunteering in Glasgow. We believe that all students should have access to volunteering opportunities while they're at college or university so check out our 'GSVB' pages to find out how you can get involved today!

Name: Stephanie
Age: 24
Studying at University of Glasgow
Role: Move More Motivator

What has your volunteering role with Goodmove involved?
My role is to help promote awareness of the activities and services provided by Glasgow Sport and Macmillan Cancer Support to help people affected by cancer be active and access community support.

How has volunteering made a difference to you?
During my first week of volunteering I attended a small gathering for a sensory impairment group along with our Volunteering Development Officer. The group meet monthly and invite guest speakers to speak about different services on offer in Glasgow. We went along to speak about Move More and increase awareness of other activities Glasgow Sport can offer.

I have never been completely confident in my ability to engage with people so I was sitting and feeling a tiny bit anxious before the event started. People started to slowly file in, and surprisingly before long, I found myself engrossed in a chat with a lovely lady about kettles and tea. Of the things she could have asked about, she had only one request. She always loved swimming, but no longer tried to swim. She is blind and was worried about running into people in the pool. I spoke to her all morning and the one thing she kept mentioning is how much she would love to have a chance to swim again.
All it took was a single note and a phone number- the result is she is now accessing swimming at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

In the grand scheme of things, it seems to be a minor change. Before I started, when I thought about using my time for volunteering and making a difference, the first thing I imagined was being involved in big, grand changes that made the world a better place. Though what I learned already just from this lady is that even helping make a small change in one person's life is just as rewarding, because I can see how much it means personally.

Do you want to become a Motivator?
Our valued volunteers are making a real difference helping individuals to access activities and support all across Glasgow. For more information on how you can get involved and make a difference in your local community click here
